BREAKING NEWS | OREGON SCHOOL SHOOTING
BEND, OREGON — A reported shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, left three children and a teacher dead, according to an official report released to the press.

On Thursday, October 15, 2026, at approximately 12:59 p.m., a 911 call was received from someone whose car had been shot at outside the school. The driver attempted to confront the alleged shooter, identified as 16-year-old John J. Griffin, who was reportedly a special education student at the same school. Griffin forced his way into the building, firing shots after the glass doors were locked.
The shooting occurred in the special education classroom, where children of various ages were present. Among the deceased were three children, ages 5, 8, and 11, as well as 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert.
Becky Drury 54-year-old teacher and 7-year-old Saylor Graham were injured and taken to the hospital in critical condition.

According to the police report, a 36-year-old man identified as Kaylub Giamanco, who has two daughters at the same school, was on his way home for lunch when he heard gunshots near the school entrance. He saw the suspect enter the school and immediately stopped his vehicle and went to the school. He realized the suspect had gone inside. He then went inside and heard more gunshots coming from the special education classroom. Giamanco went to investigate with his weapon and found a teacher who had thrown his cell phone to him. The suspect was preparing to shoot the teacher as well, at which point Giamanco shot him twice, killing him.
Giamanco, who declined to comment at this time regarding the incident, and who had a permit to carry a firearm, immediately dropped his weapon and lay on the ground after shooting the suspected gunman who killed the children, so that arriving police wouldn’t mistake him for the suspect.
Kaylub Giamanco, the hero who saved more lives, a hustings custom carpenter by trade and father of two girls from Silver Rail Elementary School, knew the family of the 7-year-old girl, who was in a wheelchair. She was airlifted to Portland to OHSU, where she was treated for a gunshot wound to the face, and his condition remains critical.

This was later confirmed by Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz. The suspect, John J. Griffin, was found dead inside the school minutes after the shooting was reported. He had used a 12-gauge shotgun and fired at least 15 shots. A gun that had been legally purchased in August 2026 by Griffin’s mother as a 16th birthday present.
Griffin was a resident of Bend and had also attended the school as a special education student.

The elementary school is located in Bend, southeast of Portland, and according to the Oregon Department of Education, had only 459 students enrolled.
In a press conference, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek expressed her deep sadness and thanked the civilian who pursued the attacker.
The motives for Griffin’s attack are still unknown. His mother issued a statement apologizing for what happened, and she may face criminal charges.
