ROME, Italy — October 14, 2026 — Pope Leo XIV is recovering at Rome’s Agostino Gemelli Hospital after undergoing surgery on October 13 to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, where doctors confirmed lung adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer.

Despite concerns about the length of his recovery, the Vatican reported on Wednesday that the 70-year-old pontiff’s postoperative progress was normal. He has resumed eating, begun walking in his hospital room, and received respiratory physiotherapy.
Doctors are awaiting additional test results to determine the cancer’s stage and whether further treatment may be necessary.
The Pope’s recovery could also affect his planned November visit to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru. Although the trip remains uncertain, Vatican officials have not announced a definitive change to the schedule.
Catholics and well-wishers around the world continue to pray for Pope Leo XIV’s health and a full recovery.
