Woman stabs 7-year-old Venezuelan girl to death
A seven-year-old Venezuelan girl, identified by her family as Eddimar Paola Hernandez Chacon, was murdered by an unknown woman, 48-year-old Shavon Gayden, on October 3, 2026, at approximately 11:55 a.m., while walking on the sidewalk in the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, Chicago.
Police reports indicate there is no known motive for the attack. The girl was walking with her mother, Eddimar, when a woman they didn’t know approached and attacked the child with a sharp weapon, stabbing her multiple times in the back.
The woman fled, but residents of the area chased after her, catching and detaining her until the police arrived.
The girl was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead from her severe injuries.
The woman received medical attention for minor injuries sustained during the attack. She had also been arrested in 2023 for allegedly confronting a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) employee and received two years of probation.
She was arrested for assault in 2024 and placed under court supervision in July 2025.
She also had an outstanding felony warrant since February 2025.
Police reported Sunday night that Shavon Gayden of Chicago will be charged with first-degree murder in the killing of 7-year-old Eddimar Paola Hernandez Chacon.
