Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, September 15, 2026. Three people died: two NBC News employees identified as Eliana Moreno, a fellow journalist and Spanish-language reporter for Telemundo 52, and George Marciniw, the pilot. Edy Fernando Gutiérrez Mejía was tragically passing by when the helicopter crashed on top of him.
Eliana Moreno and George Marciniw, the pilot of the NBC News helicopter, crashed shortly before 7 p.m. PST while covering a fatal collision between an SUV and a Metro bus in the San Fernando Valley.
The helicopter that crashed at 9100 North Mason Avenue in Chatsworth, California, was carrying two people covering the news of the incident. Both had begun flying together in 2023.
In an online video she was recording at the moment of the collision, seconds before the helicopter crashed among commercial buildings, Eliana Moreno can be heard calmly telling the pilot, “Pull … can you .. you can’t pull up?,” before the video ends.
Edy Fernando Gutiérrez Mejía, 29, had arrived in Los Angeles, California, on Tuesday morning. He lived in Cuilapa, in southeastern Guatemala, and had come to pick up a car he planned to sell. He had only been in Chatsworth, the city where the tragedy occurred, for a few hours, according to his cousin, who also said his family is arranging to repatriate his body to Guatemala. The other two Guatemalans who were with him were injured.
The investigation is ongoing, and the video is valuable to the Federal Aviation Administration in determining the cause of the helicopter crash.
