Justice Department lawyers defended and argued that their access to the White House is a “privilege,” citing national security concerns. “Access to the White House is a privilege, not a right,” the Justice Department lawyers wrote.
Even at the UN General Assembly meeting in New York on Tuesday, CNN journalist Kaitlan Collins was present, and President Donald Trump found her presence extremely distasteful.
He addressed a group of reporters outside the building: “It’s an honor to be here. I’m surprised CNN is here covering my event.”
Journalist Collins said, “The United Nations allowed us in, sir.”
Trump said, “You shouldn’t be here covering my event,” “You said you weren’t going to cover me. You shouldn’t be covering it.”
Collins: “We have United Nations credentials to cover the General Assembly.”
The Trump administration argues that it is acting within its First Amendment rights, as the government can deny reporters access for two compelling reasons: failure to meet minimum standards of professionalism for the press.
