Toledo Police Deputy Chief Joseph Heffernan reported that at least two gunmen, possibly exchanging gunfire with each other, opened fire near the Old West End Festival in Toledo on Saturday afternoon, wounding 12 people.
The annual festival, a beloved Toledo tradition, features live music, food markets, an outdoor beer garden, and children’s activities.
The shooting occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. near the Old West End Festival in Toledo. Two of the victims are in critical condition.
The oldest victim was 61 and the youngest was 14, said Police Lieutenant Dan Gerken, who noted that most of the victims were in their 20s. He also emphasized that the investigation is still in its early stages and that authorities are speaking with victims and witnesses, as well as reviewing security camera footage.
Heffernan indicated that there were additional police officers on duty for the festival and a large number of off-duty officers working at the event, adding that mobile security cameras were also in use. “It’s a real shame that a few people, for whatever reason, chose to disrupt a community event that has been so beloved for so many years,” he stated.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed his deep concern about the shooting. “Summer festivals should be safe spaces for families to enjoy together without fear of violence,” he declared on X. “The First Lady, Fran, and I are praying for everyone affected by the incident at the Old West End Festival, and we are confident that law enforcement will locate the suspects in this senseless crime.”
In a statement, the Old West End Association announced the cancellation of Sunday’s festivities.
