Robert Duvall, the actor who earned a significant place in American film history with roles in ‘The Godfather’, ‘Apocalypse Now’, and as a failed country singer in ‘Tender Mercies’, died on Sunday at the age of 95.

He did not request a formal religious service, so his family encouraged his fans to honor his memory by “watching a good movie, telling a good story around a table with friends, or taking a walk in the countryside to appreciate the beauty of the world.”

Duvall had a six-decade career in Hollywood, playing leading and supporting roles, delivering performances of restrained fury and serene seriousness.
He immersed himself completely in each character, whether playing a ruthless television executive in “Network” (1976) or a passionate Pentecostal preacher in “The Apostle” (1997).
He was nominated for seven Academy Awards and seven Golden Globes. He won the Oscar for Best Actor at the 56th Academy Awards on April 9, 1984, for his portrayal of alcoholic country singer Mac Sledge in Bruce Beresford’s “Tender Mercies.”

He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as an alcoholic former country music star in “Tender Mercies” (1983). His other Oscar-nominated films include “The Godfather” (1972), “Apocalypse Now” (1979), “The Great Santini” (1979), “The Apostle” (1997), “A Civil Action” (1998), and “The Judge” (2014). His other notable films included The Outfit (1973), The Godfather Part II (1974), The Conversation (1974), Network (1976), True Confessions (1981), The Natural (1984), Colors (1988 film) (1988), Days of Thunder (1990), Rambling Rose (1991), Falling Down (1993), The Paper (1994), Sling Blade (1996), Gone in 60 Seconds (2000), Open Range (2003), Crazy Heart (2009), Get Low (2010), Jack Reacher (2012), Widows (2018), and Hustle (2022).
