José Alberto Suárez, a friend, colleague, and journalist, president and general manager of Telemundo 31, Telemundo 49, and Telemundo Ft. Myers, passed away in Kenya at the age of 55 on August 19, 2026.

He was born and raised in Florida, USA, and attended Coral Gables High School before beginning his journalistic career in Miami media. Suárez died when a tourist helicopter crashed in Samburu County, in northeastern Kenya. He was one of four Americans who also perished in the crash.
For more than two decades, Suárez had led and worked at Telemundo and NBC in multiple television markets across the country, including Telemundo 33, Telemundo Fresno, Telemundo Las Vegas, Telemundo Utah, and Telemundo San Antonio.
Suárez received numerous industry accolades, including a Lone Star Emmy, a Suncoast Emmy, three Emmy Awards for Best Daily Newscast, and several Associated Press awards.
