On Wednesday, March 25, Putnam County Coroner Todd Zeiner confirmed the Buffy actor’s death. “Evidence indicates that the death was due to possible evidence of a pre-existing condition.” Family members confirmed that Brendon had a history of heart problems, adding that there were no signs of foul play. All indications pointed to his death being from natural causes.
The actor’s family confirmed his passing in an Instagram post on March 20. “It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed away in his sleep from natural causes,” his loved ones said in a statement.
“Those who truly knew him knew that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was,” his family said. “While it’s no secret that Nicholas struggled in the past, he was taking medication and receiving treatment to manage his condition and was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing. Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown their love and support.”
Brendon became famous for his role as Xander Harris on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a series that aired for seven seasons, from 1997 to 2003, alongside his co-stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, and David Boreanaz.
“They’ll never know how hard it is to be the unchosen one,” said Gellar, 48, in an Instagram tribute to Brendon, quoting his Buffy character alongside a throwback photo of the two of them. “To live so close to the spotlight and never step into it. But I do know. I see more than anyone can imagine, because no one is watching me. I saw you, Nicky. I know you’re resting in peace in that big rocking chair in heaven.”
Hannigan, 52, and Boreanaz, 56, also mourned his loss. Besides Buffy, Brendon was known for his work in other television series such as Bradley Cooper’s Kitchen Confidential and Criminal Minds, where he played the recurring character Kevin Lynch, and films such as Psycho Beach Party, Unholy, and Coherence.
