Iran on Thursday launched a missile at a US air base in Kuwait, just hours after the US attack on the Islamic Republic. Kuwait was able to shoot down the ballistic missile, according to the US and Kuwaiti militaries. No damage or casualties were reported.
Both sides accused each other of violating the fragile ceasefire and jeopardizing diplomatic efforts to end the war.
Although Iran claimed to have attacked a US base responsible for the attacks carried out Wednesday night in Bandar Abbas, an Iranian port city near the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM reported on Thursday that the strikes occurred at 10:17 p.m. ET. On Wednesday (6:47 a.m. ET, Thursday), adding that Iranian drones posed a threat to US forces near the strait and to commercial maritime traffic transiting the area. The ground control base was attacked because a fifth drone was about to take off from there, the official explained.
In retaliation, Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard declared that the US military base responsible for its attacks had been targeted, according to a statement carried by Iranian news agencies.
Kuwait hosts a US air base that Iran and its allies had already attacked as part of the three-month-long war. The Revolutionary Guard warned on Thursday that any further US attack would provoke a “stronger” response and that Washington would bear the consequences.
